We love our pets. I have a Pomeranian dog who I absolutely adore, she’s almost always by my side, and I’d do anything to make sure she lives a long, good life. Most pet-owning Americans would agree with me. We treat our pets as members of the family. The statics prove this as gourmet food is flying off the shelves, pet daycare is busier than ever, and matching pajamas for the family now includes the dog in the set.


Leaving your chocolate in your pooch’s reach can cost anywhere from $300–500, cancer treatments can easily run $5,000; a poorly executed jump off the sofa can cost about $3,300; if your pet is acting odd and won’t eat, your bills can quickly jump past $6,000 with little thought to your wallet.


It’s not surprising that an increasing number of pet parents are seeking sophisticated medical treatments for their animals. Especially since vet bills can be on the more expensive side.

Given the race to recruit younger talent lately, it makes sense that pet insurance is among the fastest-growing employee benefits.


Bill Gimbel agrees, “If you’re an employer fighting for talent, pet insurance is the type of thing they offer to show an employee you’re not just a number.”

About 5,000 U.S. companies have begun offering pet insurance as part of their benefits, including Microsoft, T-Mobile, Levi-Strauss, Hewlett-Packard, Xerox, and Yahoo. Ikea made Fortune’s latest ranking of the Best Companies to Work For in part because it made veterinary coverage available.


The chief people officer at Sprout, Maureen Calabrese, states “For us, it’s one aspect of what we think of as a benefits offering, our headcount roughly doubled in the past two years. I’m not sure that’s ever been the deciding factor for a candidate. But it is something that when people get here, it has been a popular thing.”
